Subject	What is the purpose of the H/X pipe??

Message	The reason that I'm asking is that my Z has a custom/homemade exhaust. Just downpipes, test pipes, and mufflers with no H or X connection. From what I've read, the H or X pipe is to reduce pulsing in the exhaust that produces an irritating sound. Is that the only purpose that it serves?? My exhaust doesn't sound too bad but it make a pulsating sound at idle.
